‘The DCI has asked for an update on the cases. You go back to the team and let them know about the interview with Finch and ask someone to check his alibi,’ Lauren said, as they left the interview room and headed up the stairs.

‘No problem, ma’am.’

When Matt arrived back at the office he stood at the front by the whiteboard. ‘Okay, everyone. We’ve finished interviewing Samuel Finch and his alibis are shaky, to say the least. We know that he can be aggressive, but if it is him, we need to consider his motive. Why would he want to murder both women?’

‘Well,’ Jenna said, drumming her fingers on the table. ‘If the two victims had an issue with Finch, maybe they confronted him together? Perhaps he felt cornered and decided to get rid of them?’

‘But, if he did feel threatened by whatever they might’ve known, why the theatrical death scenes? Why not make it appear like an accident?’ Clem added, glancing first at Jenna and then Matt.

‘I agree, it’s puzzling.’ Matt pointed at the board and the photographs of both scenes. ‘The way the bodies were left isn’t random. It’s a message. The killer’s trying to communicate something with that particular line from the poem and also the way in which they were killed. We know that Finch has very traditional views about women’s roles, which would fit.’

‘Are you saying that you believe Finch is the murderer?’ Jenna asked.

‘I’m not sure. He’s not very bright. Staging the deaths as they were, with the notes in the mouth, shows a degree of forethought and intelligence. Okay, so he lied about being alone on the night Sophie died, and claimed that he was in the pub all evening and got so drunk he can’t remember going home on the night Courtney died. But that’s it. We certainly can’t eliminate him at this stage, but equally we’re not going to focus our investigation solely on him.’

‘What if there’s someone else involved who manipulated Finch… used him in some way?’ Billy suggested.

‘That’s an angle,’ Matt agreed. ‘We need to dig deeper into both victims’ pasts. Find out if they had any common acquaintances other than Finch. Any shared experiences or places. We need more information if we’re to draw any conclusions. I need someone to check The Fisherman’s Arms to see if they remember Finch being there and the state he was in.’

‘I’ll visit the pub,’ Billy said. ‘They might have some CCTV to corroborate it, too.’

‘Thanks,’ Matt said. ‘Tamsin, dig into the victims’ social media circles, check their friends, work colleagues, and any clubs or groups they might’ve been part of. Jenna, you visit Finch’s neighbours to see if they saw him at all and—’

‘Sarge,’ Tamsin interrupted. ‘You know you asked us to dig into tragedies on the ocean?’

‘What have you found?’ Matt asked.

‘About six months ago the trawler Little Sunshine capsized in heavy winds. One of the crew died and two others were seriously injured, including the skipper, who’s now disabled.’

‘Was anyone on the boat female, by any chance?’ Matt enquired, unable to contain the urgency.
